Steelers leaning toward Justin Fields over Russell Wilson in NFL free agency
Briefly

Russell Wilson's position as the Steelers' quarterback is in jeopardy as the team is leaning towards retaining Justin Fields for 2025. Steelers president Art Rooney II previously stated a preference for only one quarterback to remain, indicating neither player wants to share the role again. Fields, who started the season well, faced controversy when he was benched in favor of Wilson, despite strong initial performance. The closing struggles of Wilson's season have shifted perceptions about his future with the team, leading to speculation regarding Fields' potential suitors elsewhere in the league.
Rooney had previously said that only one of the quarterbacks would return in 2025 since they don't want to be in a situation again where both players believe they should be the starter.
Fields, who is entering his age-26 season, started the year as the Steelers' quarterback, going 4-2.
Wilson played well initially and helped lead the Steelers to the playoffs, but Pittsburgh lost its final five games - including its wild-card ouster - and the sour ending thus changed the outlook on Wilson's tenure.
'I think both of them see themselves as starters, and I don't know that they want to share the same job again next year,' Rooney said.
