"Wa Leng Wa Hor" by Photographer Adri Tan
Briefly

Adri Tan, a queer, non-binary Malaysian-Chinese American photographer, reflects on grief and memory in their work "Wa Leng Wa Hor," a tribute to their grandmother with dementia. The project examines the nuances of memory and how personal narratives are constructed through oral storytelling. Tan discusses the subjective nature of memory, emphasizing that while their understanding of their grandmother is influenced by relatives’ stories, it is profoundly personal. The exploration seeks to understand the emotional truths underlying these memories, addressing loss and cultural identity amid their grandmother's condition.
As a result, much of what I know comes from stories told by relatives. But the thing about oral storytelling is that, as time goes on, memories shift and people recount things in different ways.
There is no objective reality, but there is a truth to the emotions that people feel and remember when they tell stories.
