Kaishui Yikai Lui's tender series is a window into self-discovery and belonging at art school abroad
Briefly

Through intimate visits and informal interviews with over 30 students, Kaishui captures their authentic experiences studying in the UK. The project, titled 'Between Your Eyes and Mine,' reflects his personal journey and the varied challenges faced by each participant. Initially driven by uncertainty, Kaishui's perspective evolved as he realized the commonality of struggles among students, emphasizing their resilience and personal growth. His work highlights that studying abroad transcends mere academia, representing profound self-discovery and cultural integration, resonating through the emotional layers of each portrait.
Basing his approach on a sense of familiarity, Kaishui created his portraits through a series of visits to each of the participant's homes.
Studying abroad is more than just earning a degree; it's a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and cultural integration.
I realised that there is no singular answer to the question of studying abroad: everyone carries their own struggles and aspirations, but what stood out most was their personal resilience.
Amongst feelings of loneliness and uncertainty, Kaishui was able to find commonality and understanding in documenting these interactions.
