Following the tragic hit-and-run death of Carrot, a beloved cat, residents of Coral Gables mobilized to demand traffic safety improvements. This incident galvanized over 100 families to petition for speed bumps and other measures to protect their neighborhood from speeding drivers. The community, deeply affected by the loss, met with city officials, including the police chief, to discuss potential solutions to prevent future tragedies. Sadia Raja, Carrot's owner, expressed the emotional impact of losing her pet, equating it to losing a child.
"It was gruesome...but we brought him home to say goodbye," she said. "We're all affected. For me, it was like having a child."
One cat's adventurous life forced some of the city's top officials to leave City Hall and talk solutions... on the streets where Carrot once roamed.
Within 24 hours, the community was creating a petition to demand the city do something to end speeding cars on their streets.
They've met with city officials to demand speed bumps and safety measures in their neighborhood to slow cut-through drivers.
