Henri Matisse’s artwork will enter the public domain in 2025, granting unrestricted access for personal use and potentially leading to overexposure. The upcoming exhibition 'Matisse and Marguerite: Through Her Father's Eyes' at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, scheduled to open on April 4, 2025, will explore the artist's personal relationship with his daughter. Curated by experts with unique access to Matisse's archives, the exhibition aims to provide fresh insights into his work and legacy amidst his growing ubiquity in popular culture.
"Especially since the paper cutouts, our visual culture has been steeped in [Matisse's] aesthetic, to the point where, today, we don't even realise that Matisse is at the origin of that," says Charlotte Barat-Mabille.
"Now that you can use his works, free of copyright, to, as the British Library put it in January, 'make Matisse your own', he will soon be on every notebook, T-shirt, water bottle..."
The exhibition, titled 'Matisse and Marguerite: Through Her Father's Eyes', will focus on the relationship between the painter and his daughter, highlighting their personal connection.
The show has been years in the making and is co-curated by experts who have exceptional access to the artist's personal archives.
