Navigating parent-adult child relationships can be complex, especially when it comes to setting boundaries in shared living spaces. Parenting coach Kim Muench emphasizes the importance of establishing clear living agreements, as demonstrated in a case where a college-aged son returned home and wasn't paying rent. Despite agreeing not to have vape materials at home, the son had such items in his room. Muench advises that parents can search their adult child’s space if necessary, particularly when financial dependence exists, urging that consequences should align with the behaviors exhibited.
"Consequences work best when they relate to the behavior," Muench said, emphasizing that parental reactions should directly address the actions of the adult child living at home.
Muench believes that if your adult child is living at home without financial contribution, parents have the right to enforce rules and search their rooms if necessary.
