Millions of Kids Have Been Taken In by Relatives. Soon Those Families Could Get Paid

In 2018, according to the Government Accounting Office, 2.7 million children whose parents were unable to care for them lived with relatives, usually grandparents. But only 139,000 of these kids were officially in foster care, meaning they lived with licensed foster parents.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported about 600,000 cases of child maltreatment in 2021.
