L&D And Talent Trends 2026: Human Connection, AI, And "Unpromptability"
"Knowledge alone isn't enough to achieve the mindset shifts and behavior change needed to future-prep our people and our organizations. Though a generic Large Language Model (LLM) like Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT is great for some types of information, it's missing the context, application, and direction of a learning strategy tailored to our organization and learners."
"This kind of strategy is something only a human can create, using qualities AI will never be able to replicate, such as empathy, insight, creativity, presence, connection, vision, leadership...the list goes on. We call these uniquely human qualities the 'unpromptable,' and research supports their inability to be replicated."
Organizations face economic uncertainty and AI advancement, raising concerns about L&D leader relevance as generative AI tools enable rapid course creation. However, L&D professionals maintain critical value through capabilities AI cannot replicate. While knowledge democratization through platforms like YouTube and Google did not eliminate L&D roles, neither will AI. Generic AI language models lack organizational context, strategic direction, and the ability to drive meaningful behavior change. L&D leaders possess uniquely human qualities—empathy, insight, creativity, presence, connection, and vision—that are essential for developing tailored learning strategies aligned with organizational goals and learner needs.
