Oakland's Kingmakers Music embodies the ethos of Black Love'

Chris Chatmon, impacted by a traumatic experience as a child, has turned his challenges into opportunities for Black youths through his organization, Kingmakers of Oakland. As a child, he found solace in Langston Hughes' poem, which inspired him to channel his energy positively. His organization not only focuses on music with releases like the album Black Love but also provides vital youth activities and academic programs that enhance community engagement and leadership. Chatmon’s journey illustrates the power of the arts in overcoming adversity and fostering growth.
The arts became my truth. Additional negative experiences in K-12 public schools became the engine driving his life's work and passions.
Chatmon reflects that while his teacher didn't know how to handle his spirited energy, it led him to ultimately find solace and purpose in poetry and music.
