VR technology has the potential to transform societal attitudes towards homelessness by immersing users in the daily challenges faced by unhoused individuals. A recent study showed that participants who used VR to experience homelessness felt social exclusion firsthand, which significantly diminished their negative perceptions of homeless people. This immersive experience, as opposed to traditional 2D videos, highlighted the power of empathy and understanding in fostering compassionate behaviors, resulting in participants expressing a greater willingness to support homeless individuals after the experience.
Those who embodied the unhoused perspective in immersive VR didn't merely see exclusion; they felt it, too. This led to reduced negative attitudes toward homeless individuals.
Participants in this innovative experiment stepped into an immersive 360-degree video, experiencing life through the eyes of an unhoused person and navigating everyday scenarios of rejection and isolation.
