4chan has announced that it has resumed operation following a cyberattack that resulted in significant data theft, described as "catastrophic" by the site. The hacker, who operated from a UK IP address, exploited an outdated software package to gain access to databases and source code. Following the data breach, the site experienced a vandalism incident before moderators intervened. 4chan attributes its inability to maintain up-to-date systems to long-standing financial issues, stating it has been limited by external pressure on its advertisers and service providers.
The hacker spent several hours exfiltrating database tables and much of 4chan's source code. When they had finished downloading what they wanted, they began to vandalize 4chan.
4chan has been starved of money for years by advertisers, payment providers, and service providers who succumbed to external pressure campaigns.
