Pesto, an unusually large king penguin chick at Sea Life Melbourne, has captured worldwide attention, reaching nearly 1.9 billion social media viewers, showcasing the draw of unique wildlife.
Born weighing just 200g, Pesto now weighs 22.5kg and stands 90cm tall, making him an extraordinary example of his species and the largest chick at the aquarium.
Michaela Smale, senior keeper, highlighted that Pesto's viral popularity reflects the public's fascination with animal anomalies, stating he truly is a drawcard for visitation to Victoria.
The aquarium notes that Pesto's impressive size stems from good genes and nutrition, consuming roughly 25 fish daily, and he is expected to molt and reduce in size by 10 to 13 months.
