The FDA has enacted a ban on Red Dye No. 3 in food, citing cancer concerns after decades of safety questions surrounding the synthetic colorant.
Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana stated, 'It's a great first step for the U.S., but frankly we're just really behind,' referring to the lag compared to other countries.
Since its approval in 1907, Red Dye No. 3 has been a controversial additive, linked to cancer risks, yet it remained permitted in food until this recent FDA action.
Public interest groups have long urged the FDA to revoke Red Dye No. 3's use, noting studies connecting the dye to thyroid cancer in lab rats.
