U.S. prepares for deepest winter cold in over a decade
Briefly

A large portion of the U.S. is about to get hit with frigid temperatures, marking the first polar vortex of 2025. With temperatures plunging significantly, up to two-thirds of the country could face the coldest conditions this January since 2011.
According to Accuweather's Paul Pastelok, the first phase of this cold snap will begin shortly after New Year’s Day, bringing subzero temperatures mainly to the northern Plains, potentially followed by a brutal second phase between January 6 and 14.
The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center noted that below freezing temperatures could reach as far south as the Gulf Coast and much of Florida, raising concerns for sensitive crops and vulnerable populations.
Experts warn that these extreme cold conditions will last well into February, creating hazardous situations for those without proper heating and those living outdoors.
