Surveys carried out by the British Arachnological Society show that Orford Ness is home to 55 different spider species, including 12 that are nationally rare.
Matt Wilson of the National Trust stated, 'It's great to have identified a new species of spider on Orford Ness along with confirming that the other rare species last recorded in the early 2000's can still be found here.'
The largely untouched nature of Orford Ness, with its remote location and limited disturbance, may be aiding the success and survival of these spider species.
The coastal marshes, along with the shingle environment, offer habitats for several "specialist" species, suggesting a generally healthy ecosystem.
