"It really does indicate to us that the fabric of nature is unraveling," Rebecca Shaw, WWF's chief scientist said of the report's findings. Animal population declines show unprecedented rates, implicating future ecosystem health and human well-being.
"Vertebrate populations underpin ecosystem health and the services we get from ecosystems like stable climate, abundant and clean water, healthy soils to grow food, productive fisheries that supply people with protein," said Shaw, indicating severe impacts on human life.
The report indicates that Latin America and the Caribbean suffered a staggering 95 percent average decline, highlighting the regional disparities in wildlife loss and environmental health.
Euan Ritchie noted that working in conservation involves "experiencing trauma on a daily basis." This reflects the emotional toll and reality faced by conservationists as they witness ongoing ecological degradation.
