Dr Hartmann stated, 'Microbes prefer environments with water. And where is there water? Inside our showerheads and on our toothbrushes.' This illustrates why these items are hotspots for microbial growth.
Commenting on the biodiversity found, Dr Hartmann noted, 'We found many viruses that we know very little about and many others that we have never seen before.' This indicates the potential for new scientific discoveries.
The study revealed that 'each of our individual showerheads and toothbrushes is home to a stunningly diverse and almost unique ecosystem.' This shows how personal each microbiome can be.
