Comet Atlas C/2024 G3, reaching perihelion on January 13, will be at its closest to Earth, possibly becoming 2025's brightest comet, visible to the naked eye.
Discovered on April 5, 2024, C/2024 G3 hails from the Oort Cloud, and it might reach a brightness of magnitude -4.5, comparable to Venus.
Nick James highlights the uncertainty of the comet's survival during its close approach to the sun. Its last perihelion was about 160,000 years ago.
If comet C/2024 G3 survives its perihelion, it promises to be an impressive sight in the southern hemisphere's evening sky.
