Surfboard lights might deter shark attacks - but don't bet your life on it
Briefly

Australian researchers have found that wrapping seal-shaped decoys in bright, horizontally striped LED lights can effectively deter great white sharks by altering their silhouette.
Nathan Hart, leading the study, explained that the brightly lit fake seals break the silhouette into smaller pieces, preventing them from resembling actual seals, which sharks hunt.
Biologist Laura Ryan expressed hope that similar LED technology, if used on surfboards, might create a safer surfing environment and maintain the tranquil experience of being in nature.
Though other shark repellent devices have had ambiguous results over decades, this study presents a novel approach that combines visual alteration with proven patterns to deter sharks.
