"It's a real weird call," co-author Ann Allen, a scientist at NOAA Fisheries, told Ars. "Anybody who wasn't familiar with whales would think it was some sort of mechanical noise." This highlights the uniqueness of the biotwang and its departure from traditional whale vocalizations.
The biotwang has opened up new avenues for understanding Bryde's whales, especially in regions like the western and central North Pacific where little acoustic information was previously available. This underscores the significance of the detection in enhancing biological studies.
