The County of Santa Clara Animal Services Center has installed solar panels that serve dual purposes: generating renewable energy and providing shade for shelter animals. Completed by the Facilities and Fleet Department, this 627-kilowatt system is part of a larger effort to expand solar capabilities across county facilities. It is projected to produce around 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, benefiting both the shelter and the local power grid. Additionally, the panels enhance emergency capacity for housing large animals during events like wildfires.
The panels provide shade for animals at the Animal Services Center, allowing them more choice in their living conditions, which helps reduce their stress.
The 627-kilowatt array is expected to produce almost 1 million kilowatt-hours of energy in its first year and provides significant energy for the shelter.
