Scramble for research on coastlines after last major study failed to factor in rising sea levels from climate change

Significant land loss through rising sea levels and erosion from storm surges, intensifying rainfall and increased flooding is forecast over the coming decades.

Professor Peter Thorne stated that after last year's plea, the Government only announced 'a plan to make a plan,' which lacks urgent action.

There is no ongoing monitoring of Ireland's changing coast that encompasses all of the various risks posed by climate change.

The OPW will subsequently use the mapping developed to assist in undertaking a risk assessment to identify the communities and coastal areas at potentially significant risk.
