During the filming of a documentary in Northern Ireland, scientists discovered a new species of fungus, Gibellula attenboroughii, that infects cave-dwelling spiders. This fungus induces zombie-like behavior in its hosts, similar to that found in infected ants, driving them to open areas where the spores can spread. After reaching an open space, a neurotoxin kills the spider and a substance preserves its body for nutrient absorption by the fungus. Despite its macabre nature, the substances produced by G. attenboroughii could have significant medical applications, including antibiotic properties.
The infected spiders were found to exhibit behavioral changes similar to zombie ants, compelling them to crawl to more open spaces for fungal growth.
This discovery could unlock new applications in human medicine, as the fungus produces substances that might serve as antibiotics.
