Readers share pictures of the Northern Lights which filled the London skies
Briefly

Anne Elicano-Shields captured the Northern Lights over Hampstead Heath at 1.45 am, sharing the beautiful sight on social media with the caption: 'The perks of being a night owl. The #NorthernLights over Hampstead Heath at around 1.45am. Thanks for the heads up, @CityCorpHeath!'
Grigory Sapunov also took a stunning picture of the Aurora display over Highgate, showcasing the colorful phenomena that occur when charged particles interact with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, emitting light in various wavelengths.
Aurora displays, like the one witnessed in the UK, are more common within the aurora oval, covering latitudes between 60 and 75 degrees in the northern hemisphere. When the activity is strong, the display can extend further south, leading to rare sightings in places like the UK.
