Puerto Rico filed a $1 billion lawsuit against fossil fuel companies for misleading the public about climate change and delaying the transition to clean energy.
Several studies found that fossil fuel companies were aware of the impact of their products on global warming but continued with business as usual.
The lawsuit aims to make defendants contribute to a fund to mitigate climate change consequences and strengthen Puerto Rico's infrastructure against future calamities.
Thirty-seven municipalities in Puerto Rico and San Juan have also sued fossil fuel companies for the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.
