The proposal to build a new downtown motel in Cambria has sparked a conflict between San Luis Obispo County and coastal regulators over precious water resources.
Cambria has struggled with water scarcity for nearly four decades, leading to a stagnation in growth and a reduction of the growth rate by the county.
Despite the challenges, motel owner Dirk Winter received initial approval for a new motel, arguing it would use less water than previous businesses on the site.
The California Coastal Commission has challenged the county's approval, citing evidence that the new motel would actually consume significantly more water than the previous establishments.
