Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced that Ontario will be the first province in Canada to publicly fund Pluvicto, a new treatment for advanced-stage prostate cancer.
The government has stated that they are collaborating with hospitals to ensure Pluvicto becomes a standard treatment, with plans to make it available at most cancer treatment centres in Ontario.
Experts highlight that Pluvicto, as a targeted radioligand therapy, significantly reduces side effects compared to traditional radiation methods, primarily by targeting cancer cells directly.
Health Canada had earlier approved this innovative treatment in August 2022, but patients experienced delays waiting for provincial health plans to begin funding.
