Oldest human DNA from South Africa decoded DW 09/22/2024
Briefly

The genetic sequences reconstructed from a man and a woman who lived about 10,000 years ago show significant stability in southernmost Africa, differing from European genetic changes.
Prior to these discoveries, the oldest genomes reconstructed from the region dated back about 2,000 years, highlighting the significance of the Oakhurst finding.
The Oakhurst study reveals that the oldest genomes are similar to the current San and Khoekhoe groups, suggesting a long history of genetic similarity.
This genetic stability was only disturbed roughly 1,200 years ago when new groups introduced pastoralism, changing the language and interaction with local hunter-gatherers.
