Ocean warming has more than QUADRUPLED over the past 40 years
Briefly

A recent study reveals that ocean temperatures have skyrocketed over the last 40 years, rising from 0.06°C to 0.27°C per decade. Scientists from the University of Reading explain this rapid increase as a consequence of Earth's energy imbalance, with more solar energy being absorbed than released. The research highlights the importance of reducing carbon emissions to combat this warming. Notably, 2023-2024 experienced unprecedented ocean temperatures, influenced partly by an El Niño event, but mostly due to a faster absorption of heat by the oceans than in earlier decades.
Since 2010, the energy imbalance has roughly doubled, leading to ocean temperatures increasing at an accelerating rate, eclipsing previous records of warmth.
To combat ocean warming effectively, it is essential to reduce carbon emissions and work towards net-zero goals, representing the single most effective strategy.
