NASA has faced criticism regarding the Mobile Launcher 2 project, as escalating costs and delays have now made previous launch timelines impractical, impacting the Artemis program.
The OIG highlighted that from an initial contract value of $383 million with a projected delivery in March 2023, ML-2's costs ballooned to $1.5 billion by December 2023.
Despite NASA's efforts to keep Bechtel accountable, the Office of Inspector General fears costs could soar to $2.7 billion and further delays into spring 2029.
Given the updated projections, the timeline of the Artemis IV mission, expected to launch in 2028, now seems dangerously unfeasible without the completed Mobile Launcher 2.
