Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY's installation "The Orb" features a striking spherical design made of ultra-thin aluminum panels. Positioned at Google's Charleston East Campus, it stands 10 meters tall and 26 meters wide, showcasing intricate forms achieved through advanced computational design. The installation consists of 6,441 pieces connected by over 217,000 rivets. A hallmark of the piece is its dual identity—projecting natural light patterns during the day while illuminating in the evening, enhancing its structural elegance. Fornes aims to evoke a sense of wonder and exploration through this immersive art piece.
During the day, a pattern of holes speckles sunlight across the pavilion and onto the ground, while at night, the structure is illuminated, casting deep shadows.
This extreme curvature—achieved through cutting-edge computational design—enables the surfaces to be entirely self-supporting despite being just three millimeters thick.
