For the third consecutive year, extreme drought in the Midwest is driving down Mississippi River water levels, increasing transport costs and necessitating alternative solutions.
Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, noted, 'Without question, it's discouraging that we're in year three of this. Because that is quite unique to have multiple years in a row of this; we're obviously trending in the wrong direction.'
Water levels in the lower Mississippi reached nearly 8 feet below the historic average in Memphis on September 12, with a record low of 12 feet recorded in October 2023.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated that 'Rainfall over the Ohio Valley is also not looking to be widespread and heavy enough to generate lasting effects'.
