The globe is getting hotter at a faster rate, but the acceleration is occurring unevenly; densely populated areas with pollution may experience short-term cooling.
The researchers found that aerosol particles in highly polluted cities reflect sunlight, providing a temporary cooling effect, which is short-lived and associated with harmful pollutants.
Accelerated warming means that populations already facing environmental and climate injustices will be more vulnerable, particularly as governments clean up pollution.
As countries develop economically, efforts to reduce pollution will ultimately expose vulnerable populations to increased heat, as the protective aerosols dissipate.
