An explosion within a maintenance hole on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock caused fires and power outages, prompting evacuation orders for multiple buildings and the cancellation of classes for the remainder of the week. Witnesses described a dramatic smoke ring from the blast as firefighters responded to the scene to investigate a possible gas leak. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, although power was shut down across the campus for safety. The cause of the explosion remains unclear as the university community prepares for spring break.
I heard an explosion and then saw a smoke ring, almost like a cartoon or something. It traveled about 200 feet in the air.
You can go ahead and go home for spring break. We are closing school down for the next couple days.
Firefighters found multiple manhole covers with active fire and smoke issuing from them.
It's not clear what might have caused the explosion.
