Santorini has experienced a series of earthquakes, prompting concerns about volcanic activity. Although the tremors have been significant, a leading volcanologist reassures that there is a very small eruption risk. Numerous tremors, primarily located north of Santorini, have not caused damage, but authorities remain cautious due to the potential for tsunamis and landslides. Precautionary measures have been advised, including avoiding crowded areas. The situation is unusual compared to previous seismic activity, leading to heightened awareness among residents and officials.
The precautionary measures that have been taken on Santorini are all to reduce the risk, in case the earthquakes which are shaking the island led to landsliding or building damage.
This level of seismic activity is very unusual. In the past 50 years, there was a small sequence of earthquakes beneath Santorini itself from 2011-2012, but the earthquakes were mostly smaller.
There is no sign that the tremors are directly linked to Santorini volcano. And there is no indication of any changes on Santorini as a result.
Residents and visitors have been advised to avoid crowded indoor spaces and to stay away from areas where rockslide.
