Barcelona's subway system innovatively uses regenerative braking technology, converting the friction from stopping trains into electricity that powers EV chargers, station lights, and escalators.
Marc Iglesias, from Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, noted, 'We're trying to take advantage of the power that's already in the metro system and use that spare energy to feed EV chargers on the street.' This initiative integrates urban transit with electric vehicle infrastructure.
The regenerative braking technology is projected to provide 41% of the energy required to run the trains by the end of September, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
Barcelona is among the few cities to extensively utilize regenerative braking in its subway system, showcasing an advanced integration of renewable energy sources into urban transit.
