The golden mussel, California's newly identified invasive species, poses a severe threat to water quality and ecological health, especially in key state waterways.
"If we're lucky, and we stage a real eradication effort in the area where it's presently found, it might not be too costly and would be worth it," said UC Davis biologist Peter Moyle as experts warn about the dire consequences of inaction.
"The species poses a significant immediate threat to the ecological health of the Delta and all waters of the state," California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials stressed, highlighting the urgency for containment.
With the capacity to block major water supply pipes, the golden mussel's spread could impact 30 million residents and vast farmlands in California.
