"They're very smart animals, elusive," Paul Higashino, a natural resource specialist, stated. "The male cats, in particular, have a very wide home range. They could roam the whole island within 24 hours."
"The cats were brought in, we think, during the ranching era to take care of the mice, because when there is a 'mouse bloom' on Kahoolawe, it is of biblical proportions," Higashino said. Months can go by without volunteers seeing a mouse on the island."
