A strong solar storm heading toward Earth could produce northern lights in the southern United States and disrupt communications this weekend.
NOAA issued a rare geometric storm watch for the event, resulting from strong solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun.
The storm is associated with a sunspot 16 times the diameter of Earth, and its impact may reach as far south as Alabama and Northern California.
NOAA predicts the storm to be severe, categorized as G4, with potential for a low-end G5 storm that could cause disruptions similar to those experienced in 2003.
