Grappling with how clearings may support rainforest animal life - Harvard Gazette
Briefly

This new research provides insight into how the lesser-known clearings, bais, play a significant role in the biodiversity and ecosystem of the Congo rainforest.
Culminating more than two years of field study, the work explored the extent and characteristics of bais across the vast conserved forests of Odzala-Kokoua National Park.
Bais are crucial for endangered species like the Western lowland gorilla and African forest elephant, influencing the movement and habits of these keystone species.
Hockridge noted that these large clearings attract a wealth of animal life and play an essential role in ecosystem engineering.
