Patches of delicate white and purple flowers bloomed in the Atacama Desert after rare rainfall and warming temperatures prompted dormant seeds to grow in the barren landscape used by NASA for planetary simulations.
Despite being in the Southern Hemisphere winter, the El Niño climate pattern caused early rains, leading drought-resistant seeds in the Atacama to blossom earlier than usual.
Chilean experts believe more rain is expected, which could prompt additional flowers to bloom, potentially changing this unusual blooming event into the desert's official spring display.
