First case of walrus dying from bird flu recorded in Arctic
Briefly

The first case of a walrus dying from bird flu has been detected on one of Norway's Arctic islands, Hopen island in the Svalbard archipelago. It is the first recorded instance of bird flu in a walrus, raising concerns about transmission to marine mammals.
Frank Wong noted that transmission of bird flu to walruses is significant, as other marine mammals like sea lions and fur seals have previously died from the disease. The infection in mammals is likely due to ingesting infected dead birds and living in close contact with other animals.
