We are grateful for the quick action, dedication, and support from our partners that allowed this young animal to be rescued in the wee hours of the morning, giving Irving a second chance.
The strain the animals have contains a mutation allowing it to more easily transmit between mammals. It is also a different variation than the ones found in dairy cows and commercial poultry. This one is Eurasian in origin, first seen in 2022. It has been detected in birds that fly along the Pacific Flyway, and is responsible for a mass mortality event in 2023 in northern fur seals on an island in eastern Russia.
This is exceptionally rapid detection of an outbreak in free-ranging marine mammals, said professor Christine Johnson, director of the Institute for Pandemic Insights at UC Davis' Weill School of Veterinary Medicine. We have most likely identified the very first cases here because of coordinated teams that have been on high alert with active surveillance for this disease for some time.
Out of an abundance of caution, access is being paused to give wildlife space and allow for ongoing monitoring. The investigation involves scientists from UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis, along with California State Parks, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the California Department of Public Health, the California Marine Mammal Stranding Network, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and NOAA Fisheries.
Under a proposed deal revealed Friday, the Miami Seaquarium would be largely demolished by Miami developer David Martin, who wants to build a marina, restaurants, event space and a saltwater aquarium on the county-owned land that's been home to the marine-mammal theme park since the 1950s. Instead of dolphin shows and a sea-lion theater, the land would become home to dry-dock boat storage and marina slips; a "Fisherman's Village" of restaurants, bars and shops; and a conservation center and public baywalk.
"It's really hard. It's emotionally taxing," said Dave Bader, a marine biologist at the Marine Mammal Care Center, a wildlife hospital in Los Angeles that has responded to more than 190 animals in distress between Feb. 20 and March 28.
