"These beautiful beetles are hanging onto existence by a thread," Jess Tyler, a staff scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in the release. "They urgently need Endangered Species Act protection to survive."
"The tiger beetles can only be found in these open, bare patches of sandy, moist soil, where they use their acute eyesight to hunt small invertebrate prey," the center wrote in its release. "However, the sink areas are highly vulnerable to conversion to agriculture that completely destroys the beetle's habitat."
