Earth Now Flying Through a Debris Field, Paper Finds
""Each meteor shower we observe occurs when Earth passes through one of these debris streams, which are remnants from comets or asteroids that have shed material as they approach the Sun.""
""Shober examined a sample of 235,271 meteors and fireballs, using computational tools to identify clusters suggesting a common source, leading to the discovery of 282 meteors from a small asteroid.""
An astronomer discovered an asteroid shedding fragments, creating a debris field that Earth is currently traversing, resulting in a meteor shower. NASA postdoctoral fellow Patrick Shober analyzed data from various observatories to understand elusive asteroids and their role in meteor formation. Many meteors originate from comets, but asteroids also contribute, such as 3200 Phaethon, which causes the Geminids meteor shower. Shober identified a cluster of meteors from a small asteroid breaking apart as it approaches the Sun, indicating a cosmic debris stream.
