In 2024, Earth experienced its hottest year on record, with the analysis revealing at least 8,700 killed and economic damage exceeding $550 billion.
Prof Albert van Dijk remarked that 2024 was marked by extremes, but this is part of a longer trend of intensified floods and prolonged droughts.
The report warns that as carbon emissions continue to rise, the risks of even greater dangers in 2025 loom large, indicating ongoing environmental instability.
