Body was found in the water in 2001, California deputies say. Now, it's identified
Briefly

Decades after a body was found in California waters, DNA testing confirmed the identity of Craig William Ott, who disappeared under unexplained circumstances in 2001.
Using forensic genetic genealogy, investigators reopened Craig William Ott's case in 2023, finally giving his family closure after two decades without answers.
Deputies worked with Othram Inc. to create a genealogical profile from DNA evidence, ultimately leading to Ott's identification and reconnecting him with his family.
Sheila Ott remembered her father fondly, expressing the deep bond they shared. "He was an amazing dad to me. We were very close," she said.
