A lander hasn't successfully reached the surface of the Moon's Mare Crisium since 1976, but SpaceX is set to launch two landers there on January 15th.
NASA’s Firefly lander will carry ten payloads to collect data about the Moon’s resources and history, improving landing procedures and studying Earth’s magnetic field.
The LEXI payload, an x-ray machine, will help NASA understand how Earth's magnetosphere interacts with solar winds and track solar weather patterns.
This mission marks NASA's second attempt to deploy such technology, as the previous launch in 2012 failed to complete its objectives.
