The Electric State, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is a sci-fi adaptation of Simon Stålenhag's graphic novel. Set in an alternate 1990s America devastated by robot-human conflict, it follows a girl named Michelle who travels with a robot, Cosmo, seeking her brother. The directors aimed to craft a visually striking film, drawing inspiration from 1980s Amblin Entertainment with a darker theme, highlighting contemporary issues surrounding technology. The film features quirky robots alongside Michelle, as they encounter a smuggler and unearth an Exclusion Zone populated by robots and new allies, showcasing a blend of humor and adventure.
Production designer Dennis Gassner stated, 'I have one fallback position: when in doubt, make it beautiful.' This approach underpins the aesthetic of The Electric State.
The Russo brothers were inspired by 1980s Amblin films but incorporated a darker twist to reflect contemporary societal themes between technology and humanity.
