The initial work for the Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety (Ramses) has been approved, aimed at a rendezvous with Apophis in February 2029.
Apophis, measuring 340 meters wide, poses a significant threat: its impact would deliver energy comparable to tens or hundreds of nuclear bombs.
While Apophis will safely pass Earth at a distance of 19,794 miles in 2029, its close approach allows for rare scientific study opportunities.
Past asteroid impacts have reshaped Earth’s history, such as the one that led to the extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
